EHR & EMR Integration

Making the clinical record talk to everything else.

Practices run an EHR, a practice management system, a clearinghouse and a handful of spreadsheets that never quite agree with each other. We build the integrations between them, HL7 v2 and FHIR interfaces, API work, reporting extracts, and document which system is authoritative for each field.

Tools we work in

  • HL7 v2
  • FHIR
  • Epic
  • athenahealth
  • eClinicalWorks
  • Mirth Connect
  • Postgres
  • AWS

Scope

What this covers

The specific work included when you engage us for this service.

  • HL7 v2 interface work for ADT, ORU and scheduling messages
  • FHIR API integration for patient, encounter and observation data
  • Connections between EHR, practice management, clearinghouse and lab systems
  • A reporting layer or data warehouse fed from the clinical systems
  • Migration and reconciliation work when a practice changes EHR
  • Interface monitoring that alerts when a feed stops, not when a report comes out wrong
  • Field-level documentation of which system owns which piece of data

What you receive

  • 01Working interfaces with error handling and a defined retry path
  • 02A data map naming the source of truth for each field
  • 03Monitoring plus an alerting runbook for when a feed breaks

Questions

EHR & EMR Integration, answered

Will our EHR vendor allow outside integrations?

Some do generously, some charge for API access, and a few restrict it heavily. Before quoting we check what your vendor actually permits: an app marketplace with documented FHIR endpoints, a paid interface engine, or a flat refusal. That single answer shapes the approach more than any technical detail, so it is the first thing we establish.

HL7 v2 or FHIR?

In practice, both. FHIR is where the industry is heading and it is far better for reading structured data, but most labs, scheduling systems and older platforms still speak HL7 v2, and a hospital interface may only be available that way. We use whatever the source system genuinely supports, which usually means a mix rather than a clean single standard.

Do we need a data warehouse?

Only if you need reporting the EHR cannot produce. A warehouse enables cross-system reporting and lets you keep history when you change platforms, but it is another system to run, secure and pay for. If your questions can be answered inside the practice management system, we will tell you that rather than build infrastructure you do not need.
