Data Engineering & Pipelines
Moving data reliably from where it is created to where it is used.
Reporting breaks when the data underneath it is assembled by hand. We build pipelines that extract from your source systems, transform it using the definitions your business actually uses, and load it somewhere a report can query quickly.
Tools we work in
- Python
- Apache Airflow
- dbt
- PostgreSQL
- Snowflake
- BigQuery
- Kafka
- Dagster
Scope
What this covers
The specific work included when you engage us for this service.
- Batch and scheduled pipelines in Airflow, Dagster or a managed equivalent
- Transformations in dbt with version-controlled, documented models
- Change data capture for near-real-time replication from operational databases
- Streaming ingestion with Kafka where events matter as they happen
- Warehouse modelling in Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift
- Data quality checks that fail loudly rather than feeding wrong numbers downstream
- Lineage and documentation so anyone can trace where a number came from
What you receive
- 01Pipelines running on a schedule with alerting when they fail
- 02A warehouse or analytical store with modelled, documented tables
- 03A data dictionary covering the metrics your reports depend on
Questions
Data Engineering & Pipelines, answered
Why is our reporting wrong?
Usually one of three causes: the same metric is defined differently in different reports, pipelines quietly drop rows when a source changes, or timezone and currency handling differs between systems. We trace the number back to its source before changing anything, because rebuilding a dashboard over the same broken pipeline changes nothing.
Do we need a warehouse, or is our database enough?
A reporting query running against the database your application uses will eventually slow the application down, often at the worst possible time. Moving analysis to a separate store is worth it once reporting is regular and the data has grown. Below that point, a read replica and a well-indexed query will usually do the job at a fraction of the cost.
