Headless CMS Development

Content modelled once and delivered to every channel.

A headless CMS separates where content is edited from where it is displayed, which suits sites that need a fast front end, several channels, or an editor experience a page builder cannot give. We model the content and wire the API.

Tools we work in

  • Sanity
  • Contentful
  • Payload
  • Strapi
  • Next.js
  • GraphQL

Scope

What this covers

The specific work included when you engage us for this service.

  • Content modelling around your real content types, not a generic template
  • An editor experience designed so authors cannot easily break a page
  • A typed API layer between the CMS and the front end
  • Preview and draft workflows so content is checked before it publishes
  • Localisation and multi-site structures where several languages are needed
  • Webhooks and revalidation so published changes appear without a rebuild wait

What you receive

  • 01A configured CMS with content types and an editor guide
  • 02A front end consuming the content through a typed, documented API
  • 03A publishing workflow with preview, draft and scheduled release

Questions

Headless CMS Development, answered

When is headless the wrong choice?

When a single team edits a single website and none of the flexibility will ever be used. A conventional CMS is cheaper to build and to staff in that case. Headless pays off with multiple channels, a heavy front end, or an editorial workflow conventional systems handle badly.

Can our editors still see the page as they write it?

Yes, provided a preview environment is built properly. Live preview is one of the things we set up early, because an editor working blind against a JSON schema will make mistakes regardless of how clean the content model is.
